A Young Man with Big Dreams

Selvin Carranza
The micro-loan program of the Society of the Good Shepherd in Comayagua, Honduras is directed by Gary Miller, who lives in Ellensburg, Washington. Right now, ten people are being helped with small loans in the program in Comayagua. This past July, our whole visiting group from the U. S. were privileged to meet several of the loan recipients in Comayagua, including a young man named Selvin Carranza. I don’t think that any of us will ever forget Selvin. He is such an energetic and enthusiastic young man that we all immediately liked him. We also walked away with the impression that there is probably nothing Selvin could not accomplish if given the right opportunity.

Selvin’s Studio at the Radio Station

Selvin used to work in a bakery in Comayagua, but one day he met a young man who was employed at a local radio station. They became friends and through this friend, Selvin was given the opportunity to occasionally speak on the air along with the regular radio announcer. This way, listeners started to know him, and he gained the confidence and support of the people who listened to him.

Through this opportunity, Selvin was eventually offered a job at that same radio station. He accepted the offer and started working as a broadcaster. He also occasionally made advertisements for the radio station’s clients. Now Selvin is a popular broadcaster who is becoming more and more familiar to many of the listening audience in Comayagua. Although being a radio broadcaster is a somewhat glamorous job, in Honduras it pays very little.

Selvin’s Equipment for Recording Ads
So—with his employer’s permission—Selvin has started a supplemental business of his own. He creates and records radio advertising messages for various businesses. After becoming acquainted with Selvin and his small business venture, the Society of the Good Shepherd decided to provide him with a small loan. This has enabled him to buy the necessary equipment so that his fledgling advertising business can get off the ground. We have high expectations for Selvin—both with his business and with his walk with the Lord.
