Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me." Matt. 25:40

If you have read our previous newsletters, you might have noticed that the Society has helped several people with souvenir businesses alongside the Pan-American Highway between Comayagua and Siguatepeque, Honduras. This highway is a channel of communication and commerce that unites North, Central, and South America. It is commercially very important for Honduras. Many, many families live near the highway because so many national and international travelers drive on it. Numerous Honduran families have prospered with businesses that sell Honduran crafts to both tourists and business people who travel on the highway. This is especially noticeable in the stretch of the Pan-American Highway between Comayagua and Siguatepeque. The Society has helped several business owners from that area, and we are happy to see how well they are all prospering. Honduras microloan

We are also encouraged to see how various congregations are spreading the gospel to people who live alongside the highway. We have met many hardworking, committed Christians who set a great example for others. Such is the case of one of our new beneficiaries from that area, Gerson Gamez. Gerson recently started his own souvenir business alongside of the Pan-American Highway. He chose this business because it would allow him to continue to serve God in his congregation as a music leader and teacher. He helps with the children’s ministry and the men’s ministry as well. Honduras microloan Gerson requested a loan from the Society of the Good Shepherd to improve the shed where he sells, to buy more inventory, and to make shelves to display the articles for sale. Like many of the other businesses along the highway, Gerson sells tourist items like pottery, hammocks, wooden plaques, and leather crafts. However, he and his business partner have decided to also do something different—something that would give them an advantage over their competitors: They have created various molds, and from these molds they make different kinds of animal figurines out of concrete. Once the concrete hardens, they paint these figurines with bright colors. They sell a lot of these figurines at their highway stand. Furthermore, they sell many of them wholesale to the other business owners along the highway—who in turn resell them to tourists.
