In recent years, food stands on the sidewalks of busy streets have become very popular in Siguatepeque. These businesses usually open around 5:00 p.m., and they mostly sell popular local and inexpensive dishes. This works great for some people because they can have a part-time job during the day and their own business in the evening. It’s also great for moms who aren’t able to work outside their home but need the income that these businesses provide. 
Mayra Martinez is one such business owner. As a single mother of a 12-year-old she is the sole provider of the family and feels grateful to have a business that allows her to have other jobs to complement it. Mayra worked for eight and a half years with some missionaries who lived in the country. There she learned to cook, and she started selling food every Wednesday in the area where she lived. 
Last year she moved to Siguatepeque. She decided to try to start a business with a small food stand in front of her house. It worked well at first, but she had to move to a different house and that consumed the little amount of money she had. But then she heard about the Society of the Good Shepherd, and she applied for a loan. Last month she received a loan that enabled her to buy what she needed to restart her business. 
Besides selling food out on the sidewalk, Mayra offers catering services and has two other part-time jobs. Having several small jobs or businesses is very common here in Honduras, as many people are hesitant to “put all their eggs in one basket.” Of course, all of this is a lot of work, but Mayra manages to stay active in her congregation as well. She hopes to see her business grow to the point where she is able to sustain herself and her daughter with only her food business and at the same time continue to serve the Lord through it.
