New Work Begins in Comayagua
Gary Miller and Luis explain the program to a local pastor in Comayagua
This past August when Deborah and I were in Honduras, we traveled with Luis Vega and Gary and Patty Miller (from Ellensburg, Washington) to the city of Comayagua. Comayagua is about 30 miles from Siguatepeque, where our present microloan program is centered. Gary and Patty Miller were interested in starting in Comayagua a twin program to our work in Siguatepeque. Luis had arranged for us to meet a number of people in Comayagua to help get the program launched. We were able to initiate the program there with $5000 made available by our donors.
Patty Miller at the local market
In early November, Gary and Patty Miller returned to Honduras and were able to visit a number of these businesses in Comayagua being assisted through our microloan program. One of the loan recipients they visited was a widow named Delores Bú. The Society had made an initial loan to Delores to help her purchase a new stove for the tortilla business that she runs out of her home. An enterprising woman, Delores sells tortillas directly from her house, and she also has a contract with a local security company to provide meals each day for their 12 employees.
Delores in her home
In addition to her food business, Delores has begun a rather innovative sideline business of selling used flour sacks. Using some of the capital from her loan, she has worked out an arrangement with a local bakery to buy bundles of used flour sacks from them for around $50.00 per bundle. She washes them and then resells them from her home to customers for various uses. She is able to double her money doing this. Through her industriousness, Delores is able to support herself and five others.
Delores is also working with the Society in Comayagua to assist others who have received loans there. She serves as the treasurer for the Comayagua program, and we are hoping in the future to be able to use her in teaching others how to run a small business profitably.
One of the neighborhoods in Comayagua where we will be working
Next month, I want to tell you more about the new program in Comayagua, where we will be trying some new approaches in maximizing the impact of our microloan ministry. DB
