Thomas Tallis was a 16th-century English composer and organist, who was the greatest English musician of his time. He mainly composed music for the church, producing music of great technical mastery. He is often referred to as the father of English church music. His greatest and most famous work is the magnificent 40-voice motet, Spem in Alium.
Tallis served under four different English monarchs, from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I. He died in 1585.
