Audio: Were the Apostles Failures?

David Bercot. Many Christians today claim that the church founded by the apostles lost most of the apostles’ doctrine within a generation. In fact, people say that the first century church was already losing the apostolic faith while the apostles were still living. In other words, the apostles were failures

Audio: Were The Early Christian Writings Tampered With?

D. Bercot. Were The Early Christian Writings Tampered With? One of the questions David Bercot is frequently asked is: How do we know that the early Christian writings haven’t been tampered with? Can we really put our complete confidence in their authenticity? In this message, Bercot explains how we know beyond a reasonable doubt that the early Christian writings are authentic and tamper-free. He presents many proofs, including a number of important doctrinal and lifestyle issues taught by the pre-Nicene Christians that contradict what the church taught after A.D. 325. He also points to the testimony of Eusebius, who wrote his Church History shortly after the close of the pre-Nicene era. In addition, Bercot explains how difficult it would have been for any person or church to have doctored all of the existing copies which by 325 had circulated around the known world.

Audio: What Happened After Acts

D. Bercot. The Book of Acts ends with Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome. But what happened after that? What eventually became of Paul? What about Peter, John and the rest of the apostles? How far did Christianity spread in the 1st and 2nd centuries? Who led the church after the apostles died? What challenges did the new church face? Happily, we don’t have to guess about such matters. The historical record of the 2nd century sheds considerable light on what happened during the 1st century after the Book of Acts was written. This message covers the period from A.D. 30 to the middle of the 2nd century.

Audio: What The Early Christians Believed About Assurance of Salvation

D. Bercot. Many Christians today worry that perhaps they were never actually saved. In this message, Bercot explains that the early Christians looked at salvation in two stages—past and future. They viewed their past salvation as an objective reality. They also had a confident expectation as to their future salvation. Bercot also explains that the modern concerns about assurance of salvation are a result of theological innovations that are not part of the historic faith.

Audio: What The Early Christians Believed About Baptism for the Dead

D. Bercot. One of the most puzzling passages of Scripture is 1 Cor. 15:29, where Paul twice mentions “baptism for the dead.” What was this? Was this something orthodox Christians practiced? The earliest explanation we have of this practice was given by Tertullian. In this message, Bercot presents Tertullian’s explanation and demonstrates how it fully fits Paul’s mention of the practice. Bercot also discusses alternative explanations given through the centuries.

Audio: What to Do When Persecution Comes

In this message, Bercot discusses the types of persecution we’re likely to face in the next few decades. He pinpoints the two areas where issues are most likely to arise. He then explains why the First Amendment won’t necessarily protect us when these issues arise in the future. Bercot then goes on to explain various nonresistant steps we can take to protect ourselves and our families when the church is forced to operate covertly because of persecution or if we’re forced to flee with our families.

Bercot explains the danger of leaving “digital footprints” in this era of emails, computer files, and cell phones. He then describes specific things we can do to keep from leaving a trail of digital and electronic footprints. He also explains what to do if we’re arrested because of our Christian beliefs or activities.

Audio: What True Greatness Looks Like

David Bercot. When most Protestants think of great Christian leaders, they usually don’t think of the 12 apostles. However, they were some of the greatest Christians who have ever lived. One of the things that made them great was their willingness to fade into the background and let others – like Paul – receive more glory. Meanwhile, they were quietly going about planting Christ’s church throughout the world. When most of us think of the 12 apostles, we thing of them bickering over who would be the greatest. But when the time came, that is very thing they didn’t do. The twelve worked together as a perfect team, without any rivalry among them. They had no desire to leave monuments, biographies, or accounts of their ministries.

When called upon to leave written records of their time with Jesus, they left accounts that portrayed their foolishness, but little of their wisdom. They were content to be remembered for their mistakes and failures. Because of their humble, quiet leadership, they were able to leave a strong, united Church at the time they died, instead of 12 divided, bickering groups of churches. That’s what true greatness looks like!
