Christians schools and homeschooling parents are faced with a frustrating problem: Secular textbooks expose our children to a decidedly humanistic and “politically correct” left-wing agenda. Fundamentalist textbooks from publishers like Bob Jones and A Beka promulgate a right-wing, ultra patriotic, pro-war agenda. Furthermore, they present America as “God’s country.” Textbooks from Anabaptist publishers are definitely more suitable, but space requirements don’t allow them to go into the depth that is needed to counteract the agendas from both the secular left and the Christian right that bombard both us and our children.

Christian schools and Kingdom Christians who homeschool need something in addition to what is currently available. This series of 14 messages, entitled “The Myth of Christian America,” is designed to fill that need. This series is not intended to take the place of any textbooks out there. Rather, its purpose is to supplement American history textbooks to give high school students and adults a firm understanding of why neither America or any other country is a “Christian country.” These messages can be played in the classroom for your students to hear. Or, in the case of adults, they can be listened to while driving or in the comfort of your home.

After listening to these 14 messages, you or your student will know things about the founding of America that even few college-educated people know. That’s because the information in these messages has been purposefully left out of both high school and college textbooks.

For example, you’ll learn about the highly influential role that John Calvin played in later American religious and social beliefs—even though he never set foot in America. You’ll discover that the moralistic Puritans played a key role in the African slave trade and the rum industry. You’ll find out how the freedom of religion that had been guaranteed to Quakers and Mennonites in Pennsylvania was taken away from them by the American revolutionists.

You’ll also learn why the “causes” of the American Revolution that we all learned about in school were really sham pretexts for a confrontation. You’ll see that George Washington was not the devout Christian that fundamentalist books portray him to be. You’ll also learn that one of the things that made the U. S. Constitution so unique in the annals of western civilization is that it purposefully made no reference to God.

This series has been seven years in the making. The extensive research that Mr. Bercot used in preparing these messages was from historic primary source documents. He read hundreds of documents—such as colonial charters, English and colonial laws, letters and diaries of key historical figures, and speeches and sermons given during the founding years of America. The final disc in this series (Disc No. 15) is a CD-ROM that contains all of these source documents so that you can read them for yourself to verify that the messages presented are historically accurate.

This series of messages begins with the early Christians and the historic teaching of the Two Kingdoms. Unless persons grasp the doctrine of the Two Kingdoms, they will never understand why America is not a Christian country. The messages then trace the roots of American social and political beliefs back to the Reformation and the English civil war of the 17th century. The messages look at the causes of the American Revolution, the reasons why the revolutionists won, and the terrible consequences the native Americans suffered because of the revolutionists’ victory. They look at the faith (or sometimes lack thereof) of the Founding Fathers. The series concludes with the writing of the U. S. Constitution.
