Bercot divides the early Christians into four groups:- The Writers The Didache, Hermas, Justin Martyr, Tatian, Athenagoras, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Mark Minucius Felix, Origen, and Lactantius
- The Church Leaders Clement of Rome, Irenaeus, Hippolytus, Novatian, and Cyprian, Alexander of Alexandria
- The Martyrs Ignatius, Polycarp, Blandina, Perpetua, and Felicitas
- The Heretics Simon Magus, Marcion, and Valentinus
